Blog #13

It's almost over! But I hope you will continue to learn more and more about your chosen (yep, you picked it) profession as you go. It is crucial that you maintain your own student status so that you never lose sight of what your kids feel like. In my doctoral class I just recently read Letters to those Who Dare to Teach by Paulo Freire. I highly suggest it. Great insight and validation for our profession.

For today's post...I want to know your school colors and your school mascot (i.e. Kerrville Tivy colors are blue and gold and the mascot is the Antler...). Why would I want you to know this? Because there is research that clearly indicates that students want to belong. For example, if they want to be part of a gang then why not their school "gang?" Perhaps creating a sense of community will help them belong in some way and help reduce that need to look for negative attention as their source of attention. Not perfect but perhaps it is a start. And the feeling of school pride and the love of learning can begin with you...even as the BI teacher, the AE teacher or their athletic coach. Your attitude is everything and the only thing you really can control!

And yes, we will have one more blog next week. See you for our last class on Monday, 2/8/2010!

  1. I am at Cunningham Middle School and our School Colors are Green and Gold and we are the Proud Cougars. Our School is one of the oldest of the Middle Schools in the City. It is our 50th Anniversary Year. Our Teacher Liason sells more "Cougar" shirts that any other shirt offered. I personally believe that even though we have our fair share of "problem kids" we have an excellent student body who does care about each other and about the school. I think our "gang" is pretty unique. My little gang in the AE Unit has an extreme sense of pride in being "Cougars" and I use every opportunity to instill that pride. During our annual door decorating contest we entered and we went all out and WE WON! The class was very excited and we had an ice cream social. We all pigged out and had a great time. I want to take this opportunity to say "Thank You" to all of my classmates and wish them well and especially to you for your expertise and your patience.

  8. I teach Texas History. Texas is one of the few states that requires our students to take a state history and we are the only state that requires our students to take state history twice. We do this because of Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, Third President of the Republic of Texas, who established public education in Texas so our children would grow up with a unique since of pride (guess it is working, hu).

I teach at Baker Middle School, we are Broncs, and we wear red and white!

  19. I teach at the at the old HEB on Saratoga...I mean the School of Science and Technology. It is difficult to explain because we have no sign on our building yet, our kids have P.E. in the parking lot, and most people don't realize we were open for this school year.

We have never discussed the actual school colors, but our logo looks like an olympic torch with red and blue, and the school uniform is red with a blue stripe, so I'm sure those are it.

Mascot? A few months ago our principal wanted to choose one so he asked us our opinion on a few names. "Marlins?" no, Jones Elem. "Barracuda's?" no, Grant middle. "Tigers?" no, Carroll Tigers are right down the road. (you can guess that our administration is not from around here. Someone suggested the "Robots" because of our robotics team and our tech emphasis (and we all laughed a little.) So we put it up to a vote the next day for the kids to choose.
After each of the names was called some kids voted here and there, but when we said "robots" they all started doing the 'robot'! They loved it! Needless to say, we are now the SST-CC Robots.

  20. Unfortunately I teach at a cheap charter school and we have no school colors but we do have t-shirts with an eagle on it so I'm assuming that is our mascot. I had never heard of a school not having school colors or even promoting their representation of their school but I do work for one. I wish we did have a more organized and a more school spirit school. Hopefully next year I will be part of a school that does have school spirit.
